Weekend getaways near Chennai: 10 real 1-day and 2-night trips. Mahabalipuram, Pondicherry, Yercaud, Yelagiri, Kolli Hills, plus honest drive times.

Weekend Getaways Near Chennai: 10 Trips That Fit a Real Calendar

Quick answer

Weekend getaways near Chennai that fit a working calendar: Mahabalipuram, Kanchipuram or Vellore for a one day trip from Chennai; Pondicherry for a classic overnight; Yelagiri or Yercaud for two hill nights. Kolli Hills and Hogenakkal need more road time. Kodaikanal, Ooty, Coorg and Wayanad are long-weekend trips, not a casual Saturday. Drive times below are estimates — festivals, rain and Salem NH traffic move them. Leave time is the real planning question. When do you actually get out of Chennai, and when must you be back. Weekend getaways near Chennai fall apart when a list treats a 10-hour ghat like a Saturday picnic.

The useful split is simple. A one day trip from Chennai wants you home before the late-night ECR crawl: Mahabalipuram, Kanchipuram, Vellore. A 2-night hill wants Friday evening or a pre-dawn Saturday: Yelagiri, Yercaud, Kolli Hills. Pondicherry is the classic overnight. Kodaikanal is a long weekend, not a casual day out.

Awesome Vacations already lists Yercaud, Kolli Malai, Ooty, Kodaikanal, Coorg and other South India names on the site. Listing isn't the same as "leave at 7 a.m. and be back for Sunday dinner." Hours below are typical planning bands.

How to pick: 1-day vs 2-night :-

Write the leave time first. Office Friday 8 p.m. is a different trip from a free Saturday 5 a.m.

One day trip from Chennai: stay inside roughly 1.5–4 hours each way if you want daylight at the place. Temple towns and ECR beaches fit. Don't add a second district "because it's on the way" unless you like seeing only the car park.

2 nights: hill stations in the 4.5–8 hour band. Sleep there. One viewpoint cluster per day. Fog and hairpin traffic eat plans that look short on a phone map.

Long weekend (3 nights or a cancelled Monday): Kodaikanal, Ooty, Coorg, Wayanad, Munnar. Those are real places to visit near Chennai only if you stretch the word "near." They're in Tamil Nadu / nearby Kerala circuits Awesome Vacations already names. They're not Friday-night casual. Drive times below are typical planning bands, not a GPS promise.

ECR vs inland. Salt air and ASI monuments sit on East Coast Road. Temple towns and forts sit on the western highways. Hills sit past Salem or Vaniyambadi. Mixing all three in one Saturday is how a list of places to visit near Chennai becomes a fuel bill. Pick a coast day or an inland day. Save the ghat for a sleepover.

Festival weekends. Pongal, Deepavali-adjacent leave, Christmas–New Year, and Tamil Nadu school holidays fill Pondicherry, Yercaud and Mahabalipuram the same way they fill trains. Rooms go first. A 6 a.m. start doesn't create a parking slot at Shore Temple. If those dates are your only window, lock the stay before you lock the café list.

1. Mahabalipuram — the default one day trip from Chennai

Start here if you've never done the ECR properly. The Mahabalipuram day trip is Shore Temple, the bas-reliefs, and a beach hour, about 50–70 km south. Plan 1.5–2.5 hours each way depending on East Coast Road traffic.

Go early. ASI ticket counters and school-holiday coaches fill the same lanes. A Mahabalipuram-plus-ECR Saturday can add one extra stop — Covelong / a quieter beach stretch or a seafood lunch town — if the group is small and you leave Chennai before 7 a.m. That's still one district of coastline. It isn't Pondicherry.

Don't add Puducherry on the same Saturday and call it relaxed. Shore Temple plus a second temple cluster plus a third beach is how the Mahabalipuram day trip becomes a car-park tour.

This is the cleanest one day trip from Chennai for first-time visitors and families with children who still need to be home by dinner. Carry water, a hat, and modest cover for the monument zone. Check current ASI / site hours the morning you go.

2. Pondicherry — the standard Pondicherry weekend trip

Most Chennai groups sleep two nights: White Town walk, Promenade, a café stretch, and actual rest. The road is typically 3–4 hours (about 150–170 km) via Tindivanam / ECR variants. Friday-night arrival works if you'll take a late check-in.

Auroville is a half-day add, not a second destination you "cover" in 90 minutes. The Matrimandir viewing point has its own visitor rules — check the current Auroville visitor channel before you promise anyone the inner chamber (you usually don't get that on a casual pass). Sunday morning Auroville plus a 3 p.m. Chennai departure is tight. Keep it for the middle day of a two-night stay.

French-quarter walking is the product. Scooter rental is common and also how weekends get messy: one-ways, sand, and no helmet plan. If the group hasn't ridden in traffic, walk and use a known cab.

One night is possible. You'll drive more than you stroll. Two nights is why Pondicherry stays at the top of weekend getaways near Chennai.

3. Yelagiri — short hill, real 2 nights

People say Yelagiri Yercaud in one breath when they want the closer hill. From Chennai, plan 4.5–6 hours (roughly 220–230 km) via Vaniyambadi / the ghat. It isn't a one-day return unless you enjoy six hours of seatbelt for two hours of weather.

Punganoor lake, a viewpoint, and a walk are enough. Don't copy a 12-point Holidify loop onto Saturday afternoon. Sunday is for one more easy outdoor hour and a pre-lunch descent if office is Monday.

4. Yercaud — the Salem hill Awesome Vacations already lists

Yercaud sits on Awesome Vacations' South India list. That's a place name, not a 3-hour myth. Via Salem, plan 6–7.5 hours from Chennai (about 350–370 km). Leave Friday evening or very early Saturday.

the lake loop and a coffee-estate walk are the usual weekend. Tamil Nadu school holidays fill rooms. Book stays before you lock the viewpoint list. This is a 2-night hill, not a one day trip from Chennai.

Salem is the base town you pass, not a sightseeing day you owe the itinerary. If you need a medical shop, fuel, or a late dinner that isn't a hill café, do it on the way up Friday or the way down Sunday — not as a third "place."

If someone in the group can't do ghats, pick Mahabalipuram or Kanchipuram instead of forcing Yercaud.

5. Kolli Hills (Kolli Malai) — listed, longer, worth two nights

Kolli Hills / Kolli Malai is also on the company's South India set. The hairpins (the well-known 70-bend approach) are the point and the delay. From Chennai, plan 6.5–8 hours via Salem–Namakkal (about 350–380 km).

Agaram / viewpoint stretches and a waterfall stop if the path is open after rain — confirm locally. This isn't a Sunday-only dash. Two nights. Fog and wet tarmac are normal in the wetter months.

Treat Kolli as the quieter sibling of Yercaud, not a same-weekend double with Yelagiri. One hill per weekend.

6. Kanchipuram — temple town day

When you want silk streets and living temples, not salt air, Kanchipuram is the inland one day trip from Chennai. Plan 1.5–2.5 hours (about 75 km) depending on the NH and the day of week.

Pick two temples, not seven. Ekambareswarar and Kamakshi are the usual pair; Kailasanathar if the group wants early stone. Monday office means leave the silk shop by mid-afternoon. This is among the easiest places to visit near Chennai with elders.

7. Tiruvannamalai — Arunachala, not a checklist hop

Tiruvannamalai sits about 190–200 km west. Plan 3.5–5 hours. A long day is possible. A one-night stay is kinder if anyone wants Girivalam timing, a calm temple morning, or a hill walk that isn't a race.

Karthigai Deepam and full-moon Girivalam nights are a different product: crowds, traffic, booked rooms. Don't treat those dates as a quiet weekend. For a normal Saturday, one temple circuit and a quiet evening is enough.

8. Vellore — fort day, home for dinner

People skip Vellore because it isn't a beach. The fort and Jalakandeswarar temple are a compact half-day once you arrive. Plan 2.5–3.5 hours each way (about 140 km). That's a solid one day trip from Chennai if the group likes forts more than salt air.

Pair either a museum hour or a calm lunch. Don't add Tiruvannamalai on the same day unless you like headlights on both ends. Golden Temple (Sripuram) is a separate, rule-heavy visit — check current entry instructions if that's the reason you chose Vellore.

9. Hogenakkal — water and a long day

Hogenakkal is a real waterfall-and-coracle stop on the Tamil Nadu–Karnataka border belt, not a made-up pin. From Chennai, plan 5.5–7 hours (about 300–330 km) via the Hosur / Dharmapuri logic your map prefers that week.

This is a long 1-day or a better 1-night. Peak monsoon and heavy rain change boat rules — confirm locally; don't assume a coracle because a reel showed one. Families with small children should treat it as an overnight so the return isn't a midnight NH.

It belongs on a list of weekend getaways near Chennai as "doable," not "nearby."

10. Kodaikanal — long weekend only

Kodaikanal is on Awesome Vacations' South India list. It isn't an easy 1-day, and it's a stretch even as a tight 2-night. Plan 8–11 hours (500 km-plus) depending on the Dindigul / ghat day. Leave Thursday night or take a longer weekend. Friday after office on that clock is how people arrive exhausted and spend Saturday recovering.

Coaker's Walk, the lake, and one viewpoint cluster are a 2-night shape if you arrived before Saturday noon. A 3-night Kodai is the adult version.

Ooty, Coorg, Valparai, Meghamalai, Top Slip, Munnar, Wayanad, Thekkady and Papanasam appear on the same company destination set. They're farther still, or they're Kerala/Tamil circuits that need their own night math. Ooty from Chennai is typically a 10–12 hour road day unless you use a train or a Coimbatore hop. Coorg is longer still. Wayanad from Chennai is an overnight-bus-or-flight problem, not a casual ECR cousin.

If the group already knows it wants those farther hills, say so at the desk. Don't force them into a "top 10 near Chennai" Saturday. Honesty about hours is the product.

Quick chooser

Saturday only, home by 9 p.m. Start with Mahabalipuram or Kanchipuram. Skip Kolli, Yercaud and Kodai.

Saturday–Sunday, one hotel night. Pondicherry, or Vellore with a nearby stay. Skip two hills.

Friday night plus Sunday 6 p.m. back. Yelagiri first, then Yercaud if you want a longer Salem hill. Skip a "quick" Kodai.

Monday off or extra leave. Kodaikanal or a listed farther hill. Don't pretend those are "near."

What to pack from a Chennai cupboard

  • Hills: a layer, grip shoes, rain shell in the wet months

  • ECR / Pondy: sun, water, modest cover for temples

  • ID if you use a hill jeep or a ticketed viewpoint

  • Motion-sickness tablets for Kolli and Kodai ghats

No packing list needs a branded "weekend kit." Rooms are requested on dates. Ask Velachery for the stay category that fits the group.

Common mistakes

  • Calling Ooty a one day trip from Chennai

  • Stacking Yelagiri and Yercaud in 36 hours

  • A Mahabalipuram day trip plus Pondicherry sunset plus Sunday office

  • Treating Auroville as a drive-through photo

  • Using old package INR as a weekend quote

Match the hours to when you can leave

Frequently asked questions :-

What are the best weekend getaways near Chennai for a first trip?

Mahabalipuram for a day. Pondicherry for two nights. Yelagiri if you want the shortest real hill. That covers most first calls.

Which places to visit near Chennai work with elders?

Kanchipuram, Mahabalipuram, and a calm Pondicherry stay. Skip wet Kolli hairpins if knees or motion sickness are in the file.

Is Yelagiri or Yercaud better?

Yelagiri Yercaud isn't one place. Yelagiri is closer. Yercaud is a bigger, better-known Salem hill and a longer drive. Pick one.

Is Pondicherry only a couple trip?

No. A Pondicherry weekend trip works for families if you keep the nightlife optional and sleep in a quiet street.

What about Ooty or Coorg from Chennai?

Real destinations on the company's list. They need long-weekend hours or a flight/train plan. They aren't in this top 10 as "near."
