Best Time to Visit Andaman: Dry Season, Ferries and a 5-Day Plan
Updated: 4 days ago
Best time to visit Andaman is Nov to April or May: dry weather, calmer seas, reliable ferries. Peak Dec-Jan. 5-day Port Blair-Havelock-Neil plan.

Quick answer :-
For first-timers who need boats and a beach week that usually behaves: November to April. May is still a dry-season choice for many groups, hotter, with seas that are often usable. October can work as a shoulder if you accept leftover showers.
The best time to visit Andaman if you want Christmas lights and full jetties is mid-December to early January — book rooms and private ferries first.
Chennai has air connectivity into Port Blair (IXZ / Veer Savarkar). Confirm current nonstop versus connecting options on airline sites. Pick the month before you pick the beach photograph. The best time to visit Andaman is November through April, stretching into May for many travellers: drier air, calmer seas, and ferries that run more often as published. December and January are peak. June to September is southwest monsoon — rain, swell, and a real chance of cancelled boats. Keep a buffer night in Port Blair before the flight home if your dates sit in that wet window.
A typical Andaman itinerary 5 days is not a tour of every named island. It is Port Blair for Cellular Jail, Havelock (Swaraj Dweep) for Radhanagar beach and water time, and Neil (Shaheed Dweep) for a slower beach day. Scuba and snorkel are kinder in the same calm months.
The packages page shows a 4N5D card of Port Blair, Ross & Smith, Neil, and Havelock. Use those names as a spine. Old INR on a package card is display text, not a weather forecast.
Dry season (November–April/May):
Andaman’s visitor calendar follows the sea more than a hill-station temperature chart. In the dry stretch, inter-island legs are more likely to run close to the operator board. Glass-bottom and snorkel boats have a better chance of going out. Andaman scuba diving season is not a government stamp; dive desks still decide daily. Calmer water and clearer viz are simply more common in this band than in peak southwest rain.
November is when a lot of South India groups start calling the best time to visit Andaman without wanting New Year rates. Showers can still appear. Crowds are thinner than late December.
December–January is peak: school holidays, Christmas–New Year, full Havelock inventory. Weather is the selling point. Queues at Radhanagar beach sunset and sold-out private ferries are the tax. Lock Andaman ferry booking on the operator site (Makruzz and other private lines) as soon as dates are firm. Government boats have their own counters and rules — confirm those separately.
February–March stays inside the comfortable window with slightly fewer festive crowds if you skip long weekends. A Port Blair Havelock Neil Island itinerary fits without the 31 December jetty rush.
April–May is hotter. Seas are often still workable. Dive shops stay busy. It is a fair best time to visit Andaman if heat bothers you less than cancelled boats. Carry extra water and start beach time early.
Do not treat 1 November as a magic dry switch. Local showers happen. Recheck the ferry app the evening before you sail.
Monsoon (June–September): rain, swell, buffer night
Southwest monsoon is the honest off-season. Some properties stay open. Some water desks go conservative. Swell and wind cancel or delay ferries more often than in February. That is the planning fact, not a scare line.
If this is the only leave you have: shorten the island hop, keep Havelock if you must pick one beach night, and do not schedule the last ferry on the same morning as the Chennai flight. A buffer night in Port Blair is the cheapest insurance you will not find on a brochure.
October sits in-between. Some years look like late monsoon. Some look like early dry season. Build slack.
This is not the best time to visit Andaman for a first scuba certification week or a four-ferry triangle with zero spare day.
A realistic Andaman itinerary 5 days
Five days means four nights. The workable Port Blair Havelock Neil Island itinerary looks like this. Exact ferry times change; the shape does not.
Day 1 — Fly into Port Blair (Sri Vijaya Puram):- The town is officially Sri Vijaya Puram; flights, hotels, and ferry sites still say Port Blair / IXZ. Land, check in, recover. If you arrive before late afternoon, the Cellular Jail museum is the usual first heritage stop. Confirm Cellular Jail timings on the official Andaman & Nicobar tourism / e-tourist channel before you go — hours and weekly closures change. The evening Light & Sound show is a separate ticket. Book on the official e-ticket path, not a lookalike WhatsApp PDF.
Day 2 — Ferry to Havelock (Swaraj Dweep) :- Morning private ferry when you can get it. Check in. Radhanagar beach (Beach No. 7) is the long west-facing stretch most 5-day plans actually use. Sunset here is the photograph. Do not stack a full scuba day on the same afternoon you sailed if anyone in the group gets seasick.
Day 3 — Havelock water day :- Snorkel or a try-dive if the desk opens the site. Kalapathar or a second beach if the sea is rough. This is the day the Andaman scuba diving season either feels easy or gets postponed. Trust the shop’s call.
Day 4 — Neil (Shaheed Dweep), then usually back toward Port Blair :- Neil is smaller and slower: Natural Bridge / Howrah Bridge rock, Laxmanpur-side sunset if the tide and path allow. Some groups sleep on Neil; some use it as a day and sleep in Port Blair to protect the outbound flight. Either works. What does not work is three ferry hops and a 6 a.m. IXZ check-in with no slack."
Day 5 — Port Blair buffer and fly :- Shopping, a leftover museum, or simply the airport. If monsoon or a cyclone alert ate a boat, this is the day that saves the ticket.
That is a complete Andaman itinerary 5 days. It is not Diglipur.
Ross & Smith, Ross Island, and the 4N-5D card
Awesome Vacations’ packages page lists Port Blair, Ross & Smith, Neil, and Havelock for 4N5D. Geography still applies.
Ross Island near Port Blair is Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island — a short harbour outing, often paired with North Bay. Confirm tickets on official or authorised counters.
Ross & Smith are twin islands joined by a sandbar, reached from the Diglipur side of North Andaman. That is a different sea and road problem. It is not a Port Blair afternoon.
A five-day trip that truly includes Diglipur and Havelock and Neil is cramped. Ask at quote time whether “Ross & Smith” on a card means North Andaman, a photo, or a mix-up with Ross Island. Don’t add a day the voucher never wrote. Season does not shrink the map.
Andaman scuba diving season and Radhanagar :-
Certified dives and beginner try-dives run in more months than tourist blogs admit. The Andaman scuba diving season people mean is the stretch when sites are more likely to be open and visibility is less of a gamble: the same November–April/May calm window. Monsoon days get blown off. That is normal.
Radhanagar beach is a walk-in beach, not a dive site you book by phase. Go for the late-afternoon light. Carry water. Respect swim-flag and local instructions. It belongs on every first Havelock night that the ferry delivered you in time.
Andaman ferry booking: private boats in peak :-
Inter-island movement is the trip. Government services and private catamarans (Makruzz and others) share the triangle: Port Blair–Havelock–Neil.
For Andaman ferry booking in December–January, treat private seats like festival trains. Book on the operator’s own site, not a forwarded screenshot. Reconfirm if that operator requires a call the day before — rules differ by company. Carry the ID you used on the ticket. Reach the jetty early. Weather can still cancel a “confirmed” sailing.
Peak is when the best time to visit Andaman and the hardest week to move boats sit on the same calendar.
Cellular Jail timings and Light & Sound :-
Cellular Jail is the Port Blair heritage half-day that should not be rushed into a missed ferry. Daytime galleries and the evening Light & Sound show are different products.
Cellular Jail timings, languages, and show slots change. Monday museum closures have been a pattern in some periods; the evening show has not always followed the same rule. Do not copy a 2023 blog table into your Day 1.
Use the official Andaman Tourism e-tourist / administration path for Light & Sound and related tickets (tourism.andamannicobar.gov.in and the e-tourist booking section on that family of sites). Hours on a hotel notice board are a hint. The portal is the check.
Month cheat-sheet (planning weather, not a forecast)
November: seas improving; leftover showers possible; moderate crowds; a strong first-trip month.
December–January: usually calm water; peak rooms and ferries; best weather, hardest bookings.
February–March: typically reliable boats; busy but less festive than New Year; a clean five-day spine.
April–May: often usable seas, hotter days; lighter than New Year; good if you accept heat.
June–September: rain, swell, more cancellations; thinner crowds; only with buffer nights.
October: shoulder month; mixed weather; slack required.
Recheck IMD and the ferry operator a week out. Cyclone weeks override any month label.
Common mistakes
Treating Ross & Smith as Ross Island
Booking Havelock rooms in peak and leaving ferries for the airport queue
Scuba on the same afternoon as a rough crossing
Copying Cellular Jail timings from a listicle
Flying home the morning a monsoon ferry might not run
Mixing a season question with a 2026 package total (cost is a separate brief)
Plan the next step with Awesome Vacations :-
If you want the islands the company already names — Port Blair, Neil, Havelock, and a clear answer on Ross & Smith — start from the packages list and ask for your dates, not a generic winter PDF.
The best time to visit Andaman is November–April/May for most Chennai travellers. Your best week is where leave, ferry inventory, and a buffer night agree.
